New Tencel pieces from the Resort 2021 collection

Why choosing TENCEL™ is helping to preserve our forests

We don’t question that the workers who make our clothes need to be treated with respect, dignity and greater equality. That is the whole ethos behind our business model. At Ninety Percent we pay really close attention to the materials in our clothes, too. There’s no point looking after the people who make our clothes if we are exploiting the earth’s valuable resources at the same time. That’s why we are really excited about our new TENCEL™ treats including our supremely flattering bodysuits and the comfiest rib cycling shorts and scoop neck top that you can wear all day and night. A piece of bold jewellery is all you need to look effortlessly cool. This beautiful material is soft to touch, super stretchy and comfortable to wear – but also made with utmost care and minimal impact on the environment.

Tencel, how its made

What is TENCEL™?

At Ninety Percent, we see materials like TENCEL™ as the luxury fabrics we must all be switching to if we are to safeguard the biodiversity of our environment as well as the health and wellbeing of our forests and rivers, and our suppliers too.

TENCEL™ is an alternative form of viscose, or rayon, a material that was invented in 1846 as an artificial alternative to silk. Great idea, however conventional viscose is made using wood pulp that can be harvested from ancient and endangered forests and is manufactured using a heavily polluting cocktail of sodium hydroxide, sulphuric acid, and carbon disulphide, the latter linked to heart disease, cancer and birth defects. You may have seen footage of chemical waste spewing into rivers in Indonesia and India. Yes, it turns those rivers black.

TENCEL™ on the other hand, is made by the Austrian-based company Lenzing using an environmentally responsible closed loop production process, which efficiently transforms wood pulp into cellulosic fibres with low environmental impact. The process recycles water and reuses the solvent at a recovery rate of more than 99%. The wood pulp itself comes from forest certified sources like those managed by the Forest Stewardship Council.

So yes, we are feeling very proud to be able to offer you some versatile essentials for your wardrobe made from this cutting-edge textile. Our luxurious TENCEL™ comes in a sumptuous rib in a range of pieces that are as comfortable as they are elegant. It’s easy to care for too, simply machine wash on cold and it will look and feel as fresh as new.
